Mustangs top Wrightstown for semi-final rematch

Little Chute Mustangs coach Brian Ryczkowski paused for a moment during his post-game huddle to hear a score update between St. Croix Central and Northwestern High School.

That game hadn’t ended, and it mattered little in the big picture. But in keeping his comments brief once again to his players, Ryczkowski made the most exciting move of the evening.

“I’ve been waiting all day to do this,” he said as he raced to climb another rung on the ladder of post-season success.

“There are only four teams left in Division 4!” he shouted.

Behind an impressive display of controlling the lines and conversions of big plays, the Mustangs defeated the Wrightstown Tigers, 28-14, in Level 3 of the WIAA Division 4 playoffs.

The victory set up a semi-final, Level 4 rematch with the St. Croix Central Panthers at Stanley-Boyd High School in Stanley, Wis. this Friday. The winner of that game will play in the state title game at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison Thursday, Nov. 15. Both teams are 12-0 this season.

Little Chute lost to the Panthers 23-17 when they scored with 13 seconds remaining in November, 2016. A 19-yard pass completion set up the one-yard run winning score in a game that the Mustangs had led and stayed tied for most of the game.

Friday, Little Chute raced to a 28-0 lead, beginning with three consecutive touchdowns in the second quarter. Jacob Lillge hauled in a pass from Noah Mueller for a 75-yard score, Isaac Van Deurzen had a 33-yard touchdown run, and Bryce Schumacher added a two-yard run. In the third, Mueller spotted Adam Hietpas for an 88-yard scoring pass.

Van Deurzen said the team is pumped for Friday’s Level 4 game.

“It’s been a while since we made it this far, a couple of years ago,” Van Deurzen said. “Now we’re looking for revenge because it didn’t turn out well for us the last time we were there. It’s so exciting. Every week brings new challenges and I love going to fight with these guys. It’s so much fun.”
